Surgical Training Rotations
Operation Smile is committed to the creation of programs leading to the self-sustaining treatment of cleft lip and cleft palate pathologies. Operation Smile has partnered with Jimma University to conduct 2 week long surgical training rotations at Jimma University Specialized Hospital (JUSH), 3-4 times annually. The main focus of the rotations is to provide education and build local capacity. During each program, Operation Smile credentialed volunteers work alongside Ethiopian surgeons, surgical registrars, anesthetists, nurses, and biomedical technicians to foster a transfer of skills via hands on training. Additionally, lectures are performed by Operation Smile credentialed volunteers and also through a series of visiting lecturers from Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (KSS) Deanery School of Anesthesia in the United Kingdom. Through Operation Smile, KSS has formed a partnership with JUSH and sends lecturers on a regular basis throughout the year. This allows Operation Smile to continue facilitating education programs on a year round-basis.
